Quick Review: This book was an optional reading for one of my courses and given that it was a short read I decided to check it out. The premise of the book is that “working right trumps finding the right work.” Newport uses four simple rules to explain this theory and sprinkles in a couple of real life examples. I liked that the book took an argumentative stance toward the traditional “follow your passion” career advice. Newport also made a point of keeping the book short and sweet, unlike a lot of similar books in the genre. The advice he gives isn’t necessarily new but he frames it in a way that’s more charged and sticks in the mind a little better. Overall, I enjoyed the book and think any college student or young adult would benefit from reading it.
